Toxins and chemicals are trapped by activated charcoal in the gut, inhibiting absorption. The porous nature of charcoal has a negative electrical charge, attracting positively charged molecules like gases and poisons. The poisons that are attached to the surface of activated charcoal can be removed from your body through feces since it is not absorbed by the body. By lowering the number of waste materials that the kidneys and blood have to filter, activated charcoal may also assist to promote renal function and lower cholesterol levels.
Precautions
When taken orally, activated charcoal is LIKELY SAFE for the majority of persons over the age of 18. Long-term oral administration of activated charcoal is POSSIBLY SAFE. Constipation and black stools are side effects of ingesting activated charcoal. Dehydration, regurgitation into the lungs, and slower or blocked intestinal transit are more severe but less frequent, side effects. For the majority of individuals, activated charcoal is LIKELY SAFE when administered topically to wounds. If you are pregnant or nursing, using activated charcoal for a brief period of time may be safe, but you should speak with your healthcare provider before doing so. If you have a digestive obstruction of any kind, avoid using activated charcoal. Also, unless you are being closely watched by your healthcare practitioner, avoid using activated charcoal if you have a condition that hinders the movement of food through your intestine (reduced peristalsis).
