Usnea spp. is a lichen that can be found growing on conifers, oaks, and fruits trees throughout the northern hemisphere. It is also referred to as “old man’s beard”, usnea lichen has long, flexible, gray-green threads and is especially prolific among trees in the Pacific Northwest. Usnea can be extracted, used topically, or steeped as usnea tea. Usnea has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Botanical medicine for over 2,000 years. Supportive of urinary tract and immune system support. In Traditional Chinese Medicine usnea is known for its "cooling and drying" energetic properties and its ability to “clear heat, move damp, and resolve toxicity”. It is helpful in bringing phlegm up to assist the lungs. In herbal practice usnea lichen is traditionally prepared as a tincture or infusion. It is used to help promote excretion within the kidneys and the urinary tract, which is beneficial in supporting a healthy immune response in the respiratory tract and mucous membranes, healthy functions of the urinary system, and help support a healthy microbial balance within the Urinary System.
